In 1887, Neve Tzedek – the first Jewish neighborhood outside the walls of Jaffa established. In its early years Neve Tzedek was a haven for writers and artists. Following the Declaration of Independence in 1948, Neve Tzedek became the front line in the battle for Jaffa, and many of its buildings housed the soldiers of the young country. After the war and into the early 1950s waves of immigrants arrived in the area, which started the decline of the neighborhood as it came to be perceived as a temporary housing solution for those with limited resources. In the 1960s the Tel Aviv municipality even planned to tear down most of the neighborhood to make way for high-rise buildings, but thanks to a growing awareness of history and preservation, Neve Tzedek was saved.
